Math Task Cards are a versatile way to differentiate your math instruction.
I’d like to start off today’s post by stating that I’m a huge fan of using Math Task Cards and really believe them to be a versatile way to differentiate your math instruction.
Teachers are required to differentiate in order to meet the needs of all their learners, and I have found that with a good bank of Math task cards, differentiation becomes a little simpler with access to already prepared materials that I can refer to. I simply pull the task cards from a bank of concepts that have already been made and organized.
The Math task cards I create, I not only print but laminate as well. This makes them last throughout the year and for years to come.
There are a variety of very cute ideas for storing them on Pinterest, but I haven’t ventured there yet…usually, I just wrap an elastic band around a set and file them in a basket. I would love to eventually have them Pinterest-ready, but that is a goal for another day 🙂
Ways To Use Math Task Cards
So, a few ways I use math task cards is in small groups, centers, and during math workshop. Now I know what you’re thinking…
“but you used to teach elementary!
These may work in elementary, but they won’t work in Middle school!”
Since I have made the move up to middle school, I’ve found that these practices are not only for elementary classrooms. I’ve found that separating my kiddos into smaller groups and giving instructions with task cards allows me to personalize and individualize the learning for my students. I really have an opportunity to walk around and see how each child interacts with the content in a fun and “game like” manner.
The math task cards I’ve designed are specifically created with differentiation in mind and most often include several different types of cards to meet the wide range of needs for various learners.
There are many great task cards creators out there as well as some really interesting ways to use task cards. The newest trend seems to be the digital task cards using google docs. I haven’t ventured into the digital task card adventure yet…but maybe as our technology improves I will be willing to trade my laminated treasures for digital ones.
