So teaching a new curriculum this year has been both challenging and exciting. I have a great bunch of kiddies and we are having fun in Math.
I’ve started the year focusing on number sense and place value as I know the time spent here will pay off further down the road.
Place value in Grade 5 can prove to be difficult for some because it is more conceptual than concrete. Base ten models can only take you so far – although we had fun creating giant 10 000 rods and a 100 000 cube-.
When it comes to “practicing” concepts, I try to keep the traditional work sheets to a minimum. Although there is a time and place for those, I prefer to change things up to keep the students engaged. I remembered a game called “scoot” which always reminded me of speed dating 🙂 I never knew what to call it in French so I came up with “Vite! Vite!”
The idea is that you place one question on each desk and each student has an answer sheet to write out their answers. You can number the questions, but since my desks are all numbered (thanks to my Sharpie paint markers, which you can read about by clicking here) the number on the desk represents the number on their answer sheet.
While there are many variations to the game… this is how we play in my classroom.
You set a timer and students have a set amount of time to answer that question and when the timer goes off they simply move to the next desk which has the next question.
OR
You can have more questions than students and students can move to a “free” question at their own pace.
OR
I’ve also done a question hunt, where the questions are posted around the room and students have to “hunt” for their questions.
