This is how I use “Ma rubrique” .
Students entering my class have limited exposure to French. I want them to realize that not EVERYTHING is different. Writing in French is just like writing in English and that many skills they have mastered from K-2 are still applicable in French. In the beginning I focus on these similarities so that students are able to use “Ma rubrique” from the very first day.
Right now we are concentrating on writing the date in French. This seems simple, but students have to remember not to capitalize the month and that the month ends in r-e and not e-r. Uppercase letters, Punctuation, Letter formation and Spelling. Eventually there will be more added to “Ma rubrique” as the writer develops.
I also want the students to use “Ma rubrique” in French therefore if I put all the traits I am looking for on the very first check list, I would be in a constant state of
“Madame Kenny, what does this mean?”
In my opinion simple is best because I always have in mind that I am creating a French environment and students have to be able to use the tools in French without having to revert back to English for understanding. Creating simple tools which will be enhanced as their language skills enhance is key.
